La Creatività di Poincaré

Lo scienziato Henri Poincaré spiegava della creatività: "Creatività è unire elementi esistenti con connessioni nuove, che siano utili".

E aggiungeva:

"Inventare consiste proprio nel non costruire le combinazioni inutili e nel costruire unicamente quelle utili, che sono un'esigua minoranza. Inventare è discernere, è scegliere [...] fra tutte le combinazioni che si potranno scegliere, le più feconde saranno quelle formate da elementi tratti da settori molto distanti. Le ispirazioni improvvise [...] non avvengono mai se non dopo alcuni giorni di sforzi volontari, che sono sembrati completamente infruttuosi [...] come vanno le cose, allora?"

In sintesi, Poincaré parla di creatività come della capacità di unire elementi preesistenti in combinazioni nuove, che siano utili, e dice che il criterio intuitivo per riconoscere l'utilità della combinazione nuova è "che sia bella".

La definizione di Poincaré è valida per le scienze, le arti, la tecnologia. Individua il fenomeno-creatività, dice in che cosa consiste (una "produzione di nuove combinazioni utili") e come lo si ottiene (attraverso un processo che prevede l'"unione di elementi preesistenti").

• Presupposti: niente si crea dal niente

• Condizioni: è necessaria una specifica capacità (unire elementi) che può essere applicata a qualsiasi argomento, e deve unirsi a un'altra capacità, quella di selezionare, tra tutti i disponibili, gli elementi giusti da combinare. L'abilità nel selezionare presenta, a sua volta, quattro aspetti:

1. competenza: per individuare gli elementi che vanno uniti bisogna conoscerli.

2. intuizione (e forse anche istinto): permette di fare una scelta funzionale tra molte opzioni disponibili, anche quando non è possibile valutare in modo esauriente la complessità di tutte le variabili in gioco.

3. esperienza: sviluppa l'intuizione e affina l'istinto.

4. tenacia: si procede per prove ed errori. È faticoso, può essere frustrante

• Risultati: c'è una prima caratteristica necessaria (le combinazioni prodotte devono essere nuove), e c'è un criterio per stabilire se la novità prodotta ha valore creativo (che le combinazioni trovate siano, oltre che nuove, anche utili è la condizione necessaria e sufficiente).

In sostanza la creatività è il prodotto di una quantità di "nuovo" e di una quantità di "utile".
Le quantità possono variare da "moltissimo" a "poco".

The Creativity by Poincaré

The scientist Henri Poincaré explained creativity: "Creativity is to unite existing elements with new connections which are useful."

And he added:

"Inventing consists exactly not to build the useless combinations and entirely build those ones useful, that are a small minority. Invent is to discern, choose [...] among all the combinations that can be chosen, the most fertile ones will be those ones constituted by elements drawn by very distant sectors. The sudden inspirations [...] never happen if not after some days of voluntary efforts, that are seemed completely fruitless [...]. How are the things, then?"

In synthesis, Poincaré talks about creativity like the ability to join pre-existing elements in new combinations, that are useful, and says the intuitive criterion to recognize the utility of the new combination is "that it is beautiful."

The definition by Poincaré is valid for sciences, arts, technology. He shows the creativity as a phenomenon, says what it consists in (one "production of new useful combinations") and how it is gotten (through a process that foresees the "union of pre-existing elements").

" Presuppositions: nothing is created by nothing;
" Conditions: a specific ability is necessary (to join elements); it can be applied to any matter, and it has to join to another ability, that one to select the correct elements to be combined among all the available ones. The ability in selecting consists of four aspects:
1. competence: to characterize the elements that must be joined, we must know them.
2. intuition (and perhaps instinct, too): it allows to make a functional choice among a lot of available options, also when it is not possible to estimate exhaustively the complexity of all variables involved.
3. experience: it develops intuition and sharpens the instinct.
4. tenacity: he proceeds for tests and errors. It is fatiguing and can be frustrating.
" Results: there is a first necessary characteristic (the produced combinations have to be new), and there is a criterion to establish if the produced novelty has a creative value (the combinations are useful and new: this is the necessary and enough condition).

So creativity is the product of a quantity of "new" and of a quantity of "useful."
The quantities can vary from "a lot of" to "few."
