The white...
Before 1800, in fact, the wedding dress was simply rich and elegant and variously coloured according to the fashion of that period. Popular classes were used to wear black or traditional dresses.
Only since XIX century, the predominant colour of wedding dresses became the white. Not only as symbol of purity and rigor, but also as a result of political and economic affairs. In 1803 Napoleon imposed the continental block to Europe to strike England, prohibiting imports and blocking the influx of dyes: the white became compulsory.
Nuptial dress were inspired to the elegance of the evening or dance toilettes, with great necklines and jewels, until after 1840 it became more chaste. So the neckline ended up being hidden by tulle or lace bibs, hair styles became less affected and jewels disappeared.

The use of the veil started spreading, thanks to new industrial technologies that allowed a low cost production. At the beginning hold by pins or small roses garlands, since the half of 1800 it was almost exclusively supported by the orange tree flowers, becoming the symbol of the marriage.

Other changes in XX century. In the 20s skirts shorten, but the most meaningful novelty concerned hair-styles. Fashionable short hair didn't allow particularly elaborate hair-styles, giving the opportunity to indulge milliners' whims with turbans, bands and affected hair-styles, made them precious by laces, embroideries, jewels, feathers and artificial flowers.

From the 30s to nowadays the nuptial dress is more and more differentiated by the contemporary clothes and has reached an absolute personality and an unmistakable style, clearly showing the fairy tale tone and the unique atmosphere of the wedding day, almost suspended in time.
